Adult Training Scheme

In the adult training scheme provisional appointments for new leaders are usually sent to District Appointments Secretaries. These will be dated and the 5-month period shown during which adults in training should complete the ‘Getting Started’ section of training. All adults should receive with their appointment a copy of the Adults Personal file.  Ideally Districts/training advisers should obtain these from County headquarters and can then issue them to new leaders at their first meeting.  Training opportunities for commissioners and other adults in Scouting are being planned. Similarly it is hoped to organise training for facilitators and presenters.

Training advisers should keep records of meetings and decisions taken. Once a personal learning plan in completed, a copy should be sent to the Local Training Manager. Learning opportunities will usually be detailed on this County Website. The Leader and adviser should also have a copy of the personal learning plan.

Modules are validated by the Training Adviser on the appropriate form. Detailed records need to be kept by the adviser but the leader should keep the form, as they will need it if they move away from the area. The leader should decide with the adviser which method of validation will be used and again a record kept. Please remember that attending a course does not mean automatic validation of a module.

Where weekend courses have been planned, alternative evening dates will be arranged if there is a demand locally, however it is strongly recommended that a new leader should where possible attend the four weekend course. These preferences should be stated on the personal learning plan.

Every adult in Scouting is now required to undertake ‘Ongoing learning’ for 5 hours per year averaged over the period of their warrant. This should be discussed with your line manager if you hold a warrant. If you change appointments then you will need a training adviser and begin with a personal learning plan.

Ongoing learning does not imply that a leader/commissioner has to attend a learning experience provided by the County training team. There are many opportunities for ongoing learning appropriate to a role in Scouting. Anyone requiring any assistance should contact either the County Training Manager or their Local Training Manager.

There will be regular open meeting/ discussion forums for advisers. District Commissioners and other officials with a role to play in adult training are always welcome at these meetings
